There are several good areas to look for a hotel or apartment in Porto depending on your specific needs and interests. If you're looking for a central area with lots of sights and restaurants, I'd recommend looking for hotels in the historic center of Porto, such as in the Ribeira district. Ribieira is the district with colorful houses and numerous restaurants on the quay of the Douro river. The photogenic district is centrally located and is very lively both during the day and in the evening. A little more to the north of the old center is the Baixa district, the area around the Avenida dos Aliados with the town hall, close to the São Bento train station and the atmospheric Rua das Flores. Baixa is a neighborhood where you will find many shops and cafes. A little more to the north is the Cedofeita district, this is the area around Rua de Cedofeita and is a slightly more artistic and alternative district.
Will you come especially for the Port? Then you can also spend the night on the other side of the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. Villa Nova de Gaia is officially a different city and is famous for the many port houses that are located on the banks of the Douro River. Via the Luis-I bridge you can easily reach the Ribeira district on the other side of the river and on the quay you have beautiful views of Porto city. If you are looking for a quieter area, you should consider looking for hotels in the Boavista area. This district, one and a half kilometers northwest of the old center, is a slightly more affluent part of Porto with chic shops, trendy cafes, the Casa de Música and the modern Serralves museum. Finally, in the summer months you can also consider Foz do Douro, this is the area near the beach, but at a distance of 6 kilometers west of the old center, which you can reach by tram.
